Isadora workshop
facilitated by Monty Martin

Proposal peer-reviewed by CDTPS Theatre Committee

Where: Luella Massey Studio Theatre, 6 Glen Morris Drive (behind Robarts Library)
When: Oct.16, 23, 30, 2015    1pm-5pm

1. Session: Isadora Basics
2. Session: Introduction to Prpjection Mapping
3. Session: Exploration, Experimentation, and Discussion

I’m very excited to have you take part this year’s Isadora workshop. During the workshop, we will work together to create a “prototype” Isadora control patch that you can use to quickly improvise, manipulate, and create interactive media for future projects. We’ll explore the basics of working with digital media, interactive controls, and projection mapping, framed within a broader discussion about the dramaturgy of digital technology in performance.

I understand that several of you might be heading over from a theory class that ends at 1 PM, so we’ll start a few minutes after the hour to accommodate. The workshop is held over three weeks, and attendance is required at all three sessions — if this is an issue, please talk to me and we’ll see if we can make an accomodation.

A few requests in advance of our work together: First, bring with you to the first workshop one or two examples of digital technology in performance that fascinate, inspire, or perplex you. The performances need not be using Isadora! If you have a link to a YouTube or Vimeo video, photos, or an article, please send these to me in advance so I can collect them as internet access at the Studio can be spotty. Secondly, for the second workshop meeting, please bring with you one medium sized object with a somewhat continuous surface of at least one foot or more — it could be a piece of fabric or paper, a piece of clothing, a cardboard box, a stuffed animal, or something even stranger. The object should durable, lightly coloured, and non-reflective as we will be using the object as a target for projection mapping. In addition, you may find it beneficial to bring with you a USB stick or external hard-drive to save your work. You might also wish to bring a selection of video files (in .mov format) images (in .gif, .jpeg, or .png format) and audio files (in .mp3 or .wav format). I will have a selection of stock media on hand for you to work with should you require it, but you may find working with your own media ignites your creativity better.

Finally, The Digital Dramaturgy Lab will provide all the equipment necessary for the workshop, including our three computers, projectors, and webcams. However, you are encouraged to bring and use your own laptops if possible. If you choose bring your own machine, please install the demo version of Isadora 2.0 on your computer prior to the workshop, which is available at http://troikatronix.com/download/isadora-download/. The demo version of Isadora is fully functional, but you cannot save your work.

Thank you all so much. Looking forward to working with you all soon.
